Robin Somerville

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and of the Civil Mediation Council, and an accredited investigator, Robin has extensive experience of disputes across a broad spectrum of subjects, with expertise in the fields of arbitration and mediation in consumer and business-to-business settings. Examples include: landlord and tenant; commercial contracts; debt; directors guarantees; director/employee and restrictive covenants; tenancy deposit scheme; family business; construction; the workplace; professional negligence; aviation; and IT/telco.

Robin’s judicial and quasi arbitral experience includes roles as a Judge (First Tier Tribunal - Social Entitlement Chamber - Ministry of Justice, and presiding over appeals against DWP social entitlement PIP, ESA and DLA decisions); work in the Ombudsman/adjudication field; and serving as Chair or Member to various Professional Regulatory Fitness to Practise Tribunals.

Robin’s Arbitral/Quasi Arbitral and Mediation panel memberships are: Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) – Business Dispute Scheme; World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators; Civil Mediation Council – Fellow; Clerksroom Mediator; Society for Computers and Law (SCL) – IT Disputes Scheme; and a pending application to the CEDR Mediation Panel.

The value of disputes handled by Robin varies considerably, including for instance domestic commercial disputes of £10,000 and a £120,000,000 property portfolio.

Robin has served as a Judge for the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition (Paris) and for the UK National and CEDR International Negotiation Competitions. The six-day ICC competition consisted of 150 mock mediations and included over 500 participants in 66 teams from leading global law schools from more than 40 countries. Robin’s role means he works with the profession’s highest profile mediators and academics, and he has undertaken a similar role for National and International Negotiation Competitions.
